The short answer
Most folding bikes weigh about 25 to 30 lb. Light aluminum bikes get down to 23 lb, the lightest we found are around 17 to 19 lb, budget steel bikes run 31 lb and up, and folding e-bikes go from about 36 lb to more than 70.
We haven't weighed these ourselves. The numbers come from makers' own pages, read between November 4 and 6, 2026, and we say where someone else's number is different.
| Type | Weight | For example |
|---|---|---|
| Tiny or titanium | 17 to 20 lb | DAHON K3, Brompton T Line |
| Light aluminum | 21 to 25 lb | ZiZZO Liberté Plus |
| Everyday 20-inch | 25 to 30 lb | ZiZZO Forté |
| Budget steel | 31 lb and up | ZiZZO Campo |
| Folding e-bike | 36 to 74 lb | Brompton Electric, Lectric XP4 |
What real folding bikes weigh
Here are the pedal bikes we've looked at most closely, lightest first. The price matters here, because going lighter usually costs more.
| Bike | Weight | Maker's price |
|---|---|---|
| DAHON K3 | 17 or 19.4 lb | $699 |
| Brompton T Line, 4-speed | From 17.64 lb | $5,850 |
| ZiZZO Liberté Plus | 23 lb | $649.99 |
| Brompton A Line, 3-speed | From 24.91 lb | $1,300 |
| Brompton C Line, 4-speed | From 26.12 lb | From $1,950 |
| Tern Link D8 | 26.7 lb | $999 on sale |
| ZiZZO Via | 27 lb | $469.99, out of stock |
| DAHON Dream D6 | 27.4 lb | $599, or $399 on sale |
| DAHON Mariner D8 II | 27.9 lb | $949 |
| ZiZZO Forté | 29 lb | $599.99 |
| Tern Node D8 | 29.3 lb | $1,099 |
| Montague Navigator | 29.5 lb | From $1,240 |
| ZiZZO Campo | 31 lb | $299.99 |
From makers' US sites, read between November 4 and 6, 2026. Prices may move around Black Friday. The K3 comes in two versions, and etrailer lists the Dream D6 at 32 lb.
Folding e-bikes weigh a lot more
A motor and battery change the picture. Brompton is the light end: it lists the Electric P Line at 36.1 lb and the Electric C Line at 38.9 lb, both with the battery. They're also expensive.
The popular American models are much heavier. Launch coverage of Lectric's XP Lite 3 gives 49 lb, made up of a 41 lb bike and an 8 lb battery. At the far end, Electric Bike Report put a Lectric XP4 750 on a scale and got 74 lb with the battery, against a claimed 61 lb without it.
That's a very different thing to carry. If you're looking at an e-bike because of hills, ask yourself how far you'd have to lift it first.
What makes a folding bike heavy
The frame material is the big one. DAHON, which sells folding bikes, puts steel frames at about 14 to 16 kg (31 to 35 lb), aluminum at 10 to 14 kg (22 to 31 lb) and carbon at 7 to 9 kg (15 to 20 lb). ZiZZO's range shows the same pattern: the steel Campo is 31 lb, and the aluminum Via, with similar gears, is 27 lb.
Small wheels help too. The under-20 lb DAHON K3 rides on 14-inch wheels, which cuts weight and folded size, and it means a rougher ride on bad roads.
Then there's what's bolted on. One owner of a 23 lb ZiZZO Liberté reports 25 lb after adding a rack and fenders, so a bike that looks light on paper may not stay that way.
How much is too much?
It depends on how often you lift it and how far. This is how we'd think about it:
If you'll carry it up stairs or onto trains most days, aim for 26 lb or less. DAHON's own advice for daily stairs is under 10 or 12 kg, which is 22 to 26 lb, and FoldingBikes4U, a UK seller, says over 13 kg (29 lb) starts to get tiring. If you lift it now and then, 30 lb is fine. If it only rolls to a closet or goes in a car trunk, you can ignore most of this and buy on price.
For scale, a workplace lifting guideline from NIOSH starts from 51 lb as a load that's safe for 75% of women and 90% of men under ideal conditions. Climbing stairs with a bike isn't ideal conditions. Electric Bike Report suggests taking the battery off, or getting a friend to help, before lifting a Lectric XP4 into a truck bed.
Here's an easy test before you buy: load a bag to the bike's weight, check it on a bathroom scale, and carry it up your own stairs.
Why the numbers don't match
Don't be surprised when two sources disagree. Amazon's listing shows 28 lb for the Campo, where ZiZZO says 31 lb. DAHON says 27.4 lb for the Dream D6, and etrailer, a retailer, says 32 lb. DAHON itself says a gap of 300 to 500 grams between two listings of the same model is common, and a rack or different tires can add more than that.
When it matters, go by the maker's number and plan for the higher figure. Ask whether it includes the pedals, rack, fenders and battery, because a weight quoted without them won't be what you end up carrying.
Is a lighter bike worth paying for?
Only if you'll actually carry it. Going from the $299.99 Campo to the $649.99 Liberté Plus costs $350 and saves 8 lb, and you get better gears as well. Below that, it gets expensive fast: Brompton's T Line starts at 17.64 lb and costs $5,850. The DAHON K3 is the exception, at $699 and under 20 lb, because it uses 14-inch wheels and three speeds.
If the bike mostly rolls to a closet or lives in a trunk, save your money. Weight also isn't the only thing that makes carrying easier. A bike that rolls when folded, as many Bromptons do, may need less lifting than a lighter one you have to carry.
Common questions
Quick answers on folding bike weight.
What is the lightest folding bike?
Of the bikes we've looked at, the DAHON K3 at 17 lb and the Brompton T Line from 17.64 lb are the lightest. There are lighter carbon bikes we haven't covered yet.
Is 30 lb heavy for a folding bike?
It's a little above average. It's fine if you rarely carry it far, and tiring if you carry it every day.
How much does a folding e-bike weigh?
From about 36 lb for Brompton's Electric P Line to 74 lb for a Lectric XP4 750 weighed with its battery. The popular American models we've read about run from about 49 lb up.
Are folding bikes heavier than regular bikes?
Often a little. Urtopia, an e-bike maker, describes a regular multi-speed bike as about 25 lb, so a mid-range folder at 25 to 30 lb is about the same or a bit more.
Can you take the battery off to carry a folding e-bike?
On many of them, yes. Going by Brompton's figures, its Electric C Line drops from 38.9 lb to 31.4 lb without the battery. Check that the model you want has a removable battery before you count on it.
How we researched this guide
This guide is based on makers' own pages, one measured review and launch coverage, not on our own weighing. DAHON and FoldingBikes4U sell folding bikes and Urtopia sells e-bikes, so their general figures come from sellers. NIOSH's figure is meant for workplace lifting, and we use it only for scale. We earn a commission on Amazon links, and that doesn't change what we say about a bike.
